About BoviBank Ltd

BoviBank – a young company based upon more than 25 years of history
BoviBank
was incorporated with limited liability in January 2002, with start-up
activities in Norway from fall 2002.
Through the establishment of BoviBank the founders wanted to facilitate
innovation and business development based on long and substantial
traditions in Norwegian dairy herd recording and breeding. To reach our
goals, BoviBank will collaborate with frontline public and private
research institutions in the respective fields.
The history of the company is short - however its assets are based upon
almost 30 years of systematic collection of phenotypic recordings in the
Norwegian Dairy Herd Recording System (NDHRS), breeding, and biological
samples performed by the TINE Produsentrådgivning (http://org.tine.no,
http://storfehelse.tine.no)
and
GENO
Breeding and A.I. Association ()
respectively. These institutions are the building blocks of the biobank,
and also its present owners.
The biobank content represents more than 8 cow generations, and more
than 8 million animals (cows and bulls). Substantial work and
investments have been laid down in organising, developing, running and
maintaining the recording systems over the years. The value of the
biobank is thus very high. Building a similar biobank would require
billions of NOKs and take very many years.
The recording and sample collection system fully relies on the
collaboration of the farmers. The establishment of BoviBank is thus not
only a result of management decisions, but relies heavily on the
commitment, quality recordings and follow-up activities of the Norwegian
cattle farmers. BoviBank highly appreciates their work and sustained
collaboration.
